Identity
They say stay at home parents can suffer a loss of identity. For me, it's been more like the discovery of a new identity. And I would hardy call it suffering.
I've been home with my baby girl for the better part of the spring, and I enjoyed our time together more than I ever imagined I would. Its been incredibly rewarding to watch her grow before my eyes, and see her learning to be a person.
My wife encouraged me to start freelancing again, and I jumped at the chance. I finished outfitting my home studio, and I began shooting portraits. In March, I signed on as a photographer with Washington Jewish Week, and started getting assignments shooting receptions and other events. I started picking up work from other photographers I know, including my first work for Montgomery County. These assignments have been great for me on many levels. I'm getting to work with wonderful organizations that are reaching out to help the disadvantaged in our community. Its incredibly satisfying to play even a small part in getting their message out.
I can't believe how quickly things are starting to come together. In May alone, I've billed more work than I did in all of 2009.
It has also given me a new perspective. It gave me a glimpse into a life that could be. Time for the family, and time to help truly deserving organizations tell their stories.
